Process + tips - Lucy in the sky with diamonds by gabrielleragusi Process + tips - Lucy in the sky with diamonds by gabrielleragusi
This is the process of + a few tips. Don't consider it as a tutorial because this contains just a few suggestions for your paintings... everyone has his own technique (and this is mine!) =)

Something you should know... When I write about Photoshop and adding stars, I mean that I added the stars using edited brushes: these were created by a friend of mine just for me and for none else (I would be jealous if it wasn't like this -_-). This means that I'm a too lazy artist who doesn't waste her time painting all the stars one by one, so it means that I'm just an incompetent artist. Yes, that's right... it means I'm not an artist at all :meow:

Feel free to ask whatever you want to know

It's always nice to see how other artists work, especially in the making of such a beautiful piece.
Thanks for sharing u w u ♥

Do you have to have a steady hand in order to paint like this? And what are the settings of your tools, what tools of SAI do you use in the first place?

1. A steady hand... well, you should have the hand you have when you draw on paper, since the movements are the same. I mean, it's not you who have to adapt to the tablet but the settings of the tablet have to be the right ones for your hand.

3. I use the brush tool for the color, the pen tool for the lines, the water tools to blend the color (I never use it to directly "create" the color).

2. The pen tool is setted with standards parameters, while the brush tool is setted like this: color blending 100, opacity mix 0, persistence 50-100 (because it's easier to blend the color with these parameters). For all the tools, I always go to "Advanced" and set the quality to the best one (4).
The water tools are setted differently: the first is 50,100,100 and Smooth Prs 50 (I use this for reflections on water or to blur objects); the second has density 50, color blending 50-60, opacity 100, persistence 50-65 (I use this for backgrounds, like the clouds here); the third water has density 60-70, c.b. 100, opacity 100, persistence 10-20 and I use this to blend the color in paintings with digital impressionistic style. The last is the Ol water but I use it with the same settings of the third water tool. I hope I helped you out =)

I see, now I know what you mean. I am planning to go work without line art for a while and try to learn a new more realistic style of manga. I never actually used these water 9 and water 10 and ol water tools because they never really worked the way I wanted to work. But what does that persistence actually do with the tool? Do you set all brushes on simple sircle or do you use others too like spread or noise or brush forms like flat round and such? Thank you for telling the settings of the brushes you normally use ^^
